Wines and Wine-Tasting in the Languedoc, south of France

For many of you, a holiday to the south of France will often encompass some sort of wine endeavour, whether it be drinking it, sampling it, learning about it…

The south of France is famous for its wine and the Languedoc is biggest wine-producing area in France, with many appellations you will recognise such as Saint-Chinian AOCs, Corbieres AOC, Minervois AOC, Faugeres, and Coteaux du Languedoc.

The Languedoc hosts many different grape types, both those originating from Rhone and also international varieties.  The former grape types are Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvedre, and Viognier; the latter grape types are Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot.

If you would like to do some wine-tasting while you visit the Languedoc region, below are some good wine-tasting tours you might like to book:

Les Jardins de Saint Benoit, owned by Garrigae and located in the village of Saint Laurent de la Cabrerisse have their own vineyard, make their own wine, and hold wine-tasting tours.  This beautiful luxury spa resort also has many holiday villas which you may book through our website www.southfranceholidayvillas.co.uk

La Baume wine-tasting tour, located between Beziers and Pezenas, is conducted in English.  Contact us at www.southfranceholidayvillas.co.uk  for more information.

Another excellent place to visit for wine-tasting is the Domaine du Temple which was founded by the Knights Templars.  For more information visit http://www.domainedutemple.fr/

If you just fancy some wine-tasting without taking a tour, you can visit many of the Cave Cooperatives in any region.  They are usually more than happy to let you sample their produce before buying and give you lots of information on their processes.  They may even let you look around their wine-making grounds.  Two such places are Caveau de St Laurent on the main road in Capestang and Cave Cooperative in Cebezan which sells wines made in Cruzy.  In these places, you are able to purchase very good quality wines for very little indeed.
