5 good reasons to visit the Cote d’Azur during spring

  • The weather is ideal – The Côte d’Azur is known for mild Mediterranean winters that slowly rollover into a dry, hot summer. This means that for many people, spring is the ideal time to visit, as the days become longer and the temperatures are mild and pleasant.

The coastal areas are the most popular with tourists and benefit from relatively stable weather year-round, thanks to the moderating effects of the Mediterranean Sea. Spring is particularly pleasant, with temperatures going from around 15°C to a summery 25°C and minimal rainfall. The climate in the hinterland might be slightly more temperamental, with cooler evenings and possibly some more rainfall; resulting in fresh air and lush green landscapes.

The author’s experience – When planning your visit to the French Riviera you should be aware that the eastern part, including Monaco and Menton, is known for their microclimate. Temperatures are slightly warmer and you can expect little to no rainfall due to its more sheltered position. On the western part around Saint-Tropez and the Massif des Maures you might experience slightly stronger and cooler coastal winds.

  • Less busy with fewer crowds – Even though the weather in spring is optimal to sight-see and explore, the masses of tourists don’t arrive until the summer. This means that you can enjoy a much more relaxed and authentic experience during springtime. You’ll find that you have usually overrun tourist attractions, beaches, and scenic spots mostly to yourself. Popular towns and cities like Nice, Cannes, Antibes, Grasse, Saint-Tropez, and Monaco themselves will be naturally lively, but much less packed than they are in Summer, so you can enjoy a much more authentic experience.
  • Enjoy a more affordable holiday – Naturally, less tourists means less demand and therefore you can have a much more affordable holiday in spring compared to the peak summer months of July and August. The main parts of your holiday you’ll see savings on are travel and accommodation. You’ll find that plane tickets are generally much more affordable and accommodation will be a lot cheaper too – sometimes less than half what you’d pay in summer. And this is certainly true for holiday villa rentals. This makes a region that’s known for its luxury and jet-setter lifestyle become all of a sudden much more affordable – so why not enjoy a luxurious spring getaway this year!?

  • The region is in bloom – Spring breathes new life into the Côte d’Azur, transforming its landscapes into a vivid display of color and fragrance. The air is filled with the sweet scent of blooming blossoms which line the roads and hillsides. Even though the lavender fields of Provence peak later in summer, you can still admire wildflowers and vibrant greenery across the countryside. Gardens, parks and promenades in cities like Nice and Menton become lush and inviting, making spring the perfect season for leisurely strolls and scenic picnics.
  • Make the most of Bank Holidays – Spring is the perfect time to plan a getaway to the South of France, thanks to several bank holidays that allow you to extend your trip without using too many vacation days. Key holidays such as Good Friday and Easter Monday, the Early May Bank Holiday, and the Spring Bank Holiday or half term offer the opportunity for long weekends or even a week-long escape with minimal time off work.

Mercantour National Park is a highlight for outdoor adventurers. It is located just north of Nice and offers an incredible range of landscapes, from rugged mountain peaks to alpine meadows, glacial valleys, and crystal-clear lakes. The park is also rich in biodiversity, with species like ibex, chamois, and golden eagles. Spring is the perfect time to explore its 600 kilometers of trails, as the flora and fauna begin to bloom. You can hike to Lac de Vens, a beautiful alpine lake surrounded by snow-capped peaks, or visit the Vallon de la Madone, a secluded valley with stunning views.

The Esterel Massif is another exceptional spot for hiking, with a dramatic range of red volcanic hills that meet the Mediterranean Sea. The contrast between the vivid red rocks and the deep blue of the sea is a sight to behold, especially in spring when the wildflowers are in full bloom. There are numerous trails to explore, from easy coastal paths to more challenging mountain hikes. Le Pic de l’Ours offers breathtaking panoramic views over the Mediterranean, while the Sentier du Lagon takes you on a path through lush vegetation, with glimpses of secret coves and crystal-clear waters.

The author’s experience – If getting lost in a natural park is a bit too much but you still want to enjoy a lovely walk, you might want to try one of the famous coastal walks. On the Cap d’Antibes, you can find the Sentier du Littoral, a coastal trail that winds past rocky cliffs and secluded coves. Another famous route is the Cap Ferrat Loop, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean. Both are classed as easy walks of around 5-6km that will take around 2 hours.

Explore the Hills and Vineyards of the Var Valley, which are a peaceful, less-visited part of the Côte d’Azur, perfect for cycling and hiking. The gentle hills of the Var are covered in vineyards, and spring sees the vines bursting into life with a carpet of green. This is also the season when the famous Provence rosé wines start to be produced, making a visit to the local wineries especially rewarding. The area is crisscrossed with biking paths, including the Tour du Haut Var, a scenic route that takes you through hilltop villages, olive groves, and beautiful landscapes.

Drive or cycle the Corniches, the Côte d’Azur is home to several famous scenic roads known as the Corniches – three coastal roads that wind above the Mediterranean, offering unbeatable views of the coastline, villages, and the sparkling sea below. These roads – Grande Corniche, Moyenne Corniche, and Basse Corniche – each provide a unique experience and a variety of ways to explore the Riviera from the heights.

Discover the Gorges du Verdon, a breathtaking canyon that stretches for more than 25 kilometers and is up to 700 meters deep! With endless hiking trails from which to admire the limestone cliffs that have been cut out of the plateau by the Verdon River, a turquoise water snaking through this surreal landscape. Spring is the perfect time to explore this awe-inspiring landscape, as the region’s wildflowers are in bloom, and the weather is mild for hiking and kayaking.

The Gorges du Loup are also a must-visit. This river gorge, located near the village of Tourrettes-sur-Loup, features crystal-clear waters, waterfalls, and rugged cliffs. Springtime is ideal for visiting, as the snowmelt from the mountains causes the river to swell, making the waterfalls particularly powerful. There are several hiking routes that follow the river, leading you through forested areas and past old mills.

The Côte d’Azur is also a haven for watersport fans from kayaking and paddleboarding at Villefranche-sur-Mer with its calm, turquoise waters and stunning views of the surrounding cliffs and hills to boating around the Lérins Islands, where secluded beaches and historical monasteries provide the perfect escape from the mainland.

The author’s experience – Are you looking for some more relaxed or child-/elderly friendly experiences? Try the Domaine du Rayol botanical gardens for a peaceful retreat, with plants and flowers from all over the world. Another sweet activity is a family picnic in the Parc du Mont Boron. From here you’ll have brilliant views over the glistening mediterranean including Nice, Villefranche, and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

The Cannes Film Festival (May) is perhaps the most famous event in the Riviera. The city of Cannes transforms into a hub of international cinema and celebrity culture. The event features massive sculptures made from lemons and oranges, parades, and vibrant street performances, making it a fun and colorful experience for all ages. And even though it’s not officially spring yet, its microclimate ensures that you’ll definitely feel “springful”.

The author’s experience – I haven’t been to the Fête du Citron myself, but Juliana (our director) went many years ago and had a blast. She thoroughly enjoyed the parades and floats, and the statues made out of lemons and oranges – from Cinderella’s carriage to a camel! The street artists are incredible and the atmosphere is exhilarating. Make sure not to miss out on the night-time parade. It is a multi-week festival so make sure to check their website for the program and to book your entrance.

The Antibes Art Fair (April-May) is a world-famous fair for art lovers. The event features stunning works from renowned galleries and artists, attracting collectors and enthusiasts from around the world.

Rose Festival in Grasse (May) – As the perfume capital of the world, Grasse celebrates its most famous bloom during the ExpoRose Festival. If you’re into the contemporary arts, the Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo (March-April) is a must on your spring calendar. The month-long festival showcases a mix of classical and contemporary music, dance, and visual arts. It’s an excellent opportunity to experience world-class performances in historic venues across the region.

Local markets in Nice, Antibes, and Cannes overflow with seasonal delights like artichokes, asparagus, strawberries, and tender spring greens. Restaurants craft dishes highlighting these flavors, from ratatouille and pissaladière to seafood specialties like bouillabaisse and grilled sardines.

Spring is also prime time for rosé wine season, with vineyards in Provence offering tastings of their freshest vintages. Enjoying a glass of local Côtes de Provence rosé alongside a plate of oysters or a Niçoise salad at a seaside café is a must.

For a true gastronomic experience, visit the Marché Forville in Cannes or Cours Saleya Market in Nice to sample local cheeses, tapenades, and freshly baked socca, a beloved Niçoise chickpea pancake.

Food festivals such as the Fête de l’Olivier in Le Bar-sur-Loup celebrate the region’s olive oil heritage, offering tastings and demonstrations of this Mediterranean staple. Whether indulging in fine dining or casual bistro fare, spring in the Côte d’Azur is a feast for the senses.
