Ensérune Oppidum – a Hill with a View – Review by South France Holiday Villas
At the foot of the Oppidum d’Ensérune is the dried up lake of Montady. A climb to the top of this hill, there is a road for the faint hearted which gives a wonderful 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside. Visit the museum (site archéologique) whilst you are at the top, it is really interesting.
Half way up there is a tourist information centre and a small coffee shop with local produce to buy. This is worth a look as it gives lots of details about the Oppidum and the dried lake.
At the very foot of the slope is the Tounel de Malpas. Malpas Hill consists of crumbly subsoil In the space of a week, Riquet and his men (it had to be done in secret because of his enemies), constructed the tunnel, which removed the necessity to circumnavigate the hill, and is 165 metres long. Considering this was built in the late 1600s it was a stunning achievement.
